Video Description: In her one woman play “Harriet Tubman: An American Hero,” Glynis Brooks brings to life one of the most important figures in American history.  During this program hear from Glynis as Harriet Tubman and also Glynis as writer and actress.  See an excerpt from the play.  Learn what it took to create the play.  Explore the questions:  How do you decide what events to include and what to leave out?  How do you create a mood and persona that honors the legacy of such an historic American?  How do you create a voice for this American hero?.

• Use the video as your students engage in a cross curricular/arts integration activity where they create a short one-person theatrical performance based on a person in history they admire/in a time period they are currently studying/or another rationale of your choice. Have students research, write, rehearse, and perform their 5 to 10 minute scene.
• Have theatre students analyze choices Ms. Brooks made in creating the production. Why do they think she chose a one-woman performance? Why did she not add other characters? What is student response to costuming of the character and physical and voice characteristics she uses to bring the character to life?
