Most bakers will tell you there’s an almost therapeutic aspect of turning simple ingredients like flour, water and butter into something satisfying. That’s certainly true at Bridge Bread Bakery where not only are delicious goods made, but hope is restored.  We follow baker Daryl Pitchford along on a typical day in the bakery, learning his remarkable story, and taking a tour of Bridge Bread’s new location where more opportunities will soon be available for even more people.

In Her Own Words – Civil Rights Activist Frankie Freeman
Frankie Muse Freeman wore many hats in her remarkable one hundred and one years including wife, mother, lawyer and civil rights activist.  As a youth in her hometown of Danville, VA Freeman regularly faced racial discrimination and promised herself that she would find a way to fight the bias that she faced on a daily basis.  Freeman spent her life fighting discrimination and helping to establish civil rights policies.  Among her many accomplishments, she was the first woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights.

Making a Difference–Wishing It Forward
A local teen motivated her peers to join her in a huge marketing and fundraising effort. Katya Gehrin was ‘wishing it forward’ to a Wentzville middle schooler who she didn’t know before starting her project. The result was a massive fundraising effort by Francis Howell High School students and their surrounding community – to the tune of 10-thousand dollars. Joining with the Make-A-Wish foundation, the group formed a club then held fundraisers throughout the year. Thanks to their efforts, a Wentzville middle school student gets the trip of a lifetime to Florida.

Making a Difference–Books N Bros
Sidney Keys III is an entrepreneur, community leader and founder of the popular reading club, Books N Bros. He’s also only 11 years old. Statistically, many African American boys stop reading between the ages of 8-12. But with the help of Eye See Me African American Children’s Bookstore, Sidney wants to change that. The club focuses on black authors, literature and history but is open to all races and backgrounds – working to build friendship and literacy together.

Mark Hemmer, Blacksmith and Farrier
Mark Hemmer is a blacksmith and farrier in Union, MO. Making his living shoeing horses and crafting tools, he fell into this line of work decades ago after wanting to learn the basics of how to shoe his own horse.  Since then, he has worked on countless horses and created a workshop enviable by any craftsman.  In addition to tending to his clients’ horses, he enjoys making tools in his shop.  Watch him as he both hot shoes a horse and then creates an ornate hoof pick in his shop.
